We’re devoting an entire series of Blog Posts to help you play better at The Oaks. We’ll go hole by hole and tell you the shots to play to score your best. The Oaks is a tight course, but it’s forgiving as well. Many shots end up back in the fairway, or on the green because of the hills surrounding the holes. Most faiways and greens are in the valleys which puts the odds in your favor.

So pay attention, trust us, and Good Luck!

Hole #1

Tee Shot

Hole #1 is a dog leg right, and you can’t see the Green from the Tee Box. The smart play is to take a club that you can hit about 200 yds and position yourself for a mid to short iron into the green. If you’re a big hitter, you can try to cut the corner, but it’s a risk you just don’t have to take. More balls are lost trying to “cut the corner” than are found lying in the middle of the fairway just a “chip and putt” away.

Approach Shot

If you took our advice, right now you’re looking at anywhere from 160 to 120 yards into the green. Remember, the Green is up hill from where you’re at. That means take an extra club, at least half a club. If you hit to the right, you’re in trouble. The smart play is to hit towards the left side of the green. If you hit the hill on the left of the green, you will probably get lucky and roll down onto the green – easy chip and putt. Keep this in mind – more balls are left short on this hole than any other hole on the course.

The Green

#1 is a good putting green. Relatively flat, but most putts will break slightly towards the right side of the green (where the ravine is) so play that little bit of break, even if you don’t see it. It’s usually there.

Keep watching for more Tips on how to play The Oaks in the coming days and weeks. We’ll work our way around the course, and before you know it, you’ll be scoring well.

Good luck, and we’ll see you soon.

One day after joining the PGA Tour in 1965, Lee Trevino, a professional golfer and married man, was at his home in Dallas, mowing his front lawn as he always did. A lady driving by in a big Cadillac stopped in front of his house, lowered her window and asked, “Excuse me, do you speak English?

Lee responded, “Yes ma’am, I do.

She then asked, “What do you charge to do yard work?

Lee thought about it for a moment and said, “Well, the lady in this house lets me sleep with her.

The lady immediately put the car in gear and sped off.

Poem by Larry Buddin

Golf tees on my dresser
Golf tees in my bed
Golf tees on my pillows
Where they poke me in my head

Golf tees in my closet
Falling from my shirts and pants
Golf tees along the baseboards
Just like army ants

Golf tees in the carpet
And underneath my feet
Golf tees lined up on the mantle
Oh, they look so neat

Golf tees in my couch
And in my back and thighs
When I sit and watch TV
I feel those little guys

Golf tees in the kitchen
In Jurassic coffee mugs
Sometimes when I pass them
They look like prehistoric bugs.

Golf tees in the bathtub
Like sailors on plastic ships
Golf tee in her make-up
Like little bald q-tips.

Golf tees in the attic
Golf tees in the shed
Golf tees, golf tees everywhere
I wonder where they bred?

Golf tees out the backdoor
Like Hansel-and-Gretel’s trails
Golf tees in the flowerbeds
Among the mulch and snails

Golf tees in my car
And underneath the mats
Golf tees in the backseat
Like little baseball bats

But when I am at the golf course
I ask my partner, like a louse…
“May I borrow some of your tees? ”
I left mine at the house!

The repair on the drainage issue on #1 and #11 is complete. Both repairs seem to be working correctly after the rains over the past few days. We still have to finish the cosmetic work – sod replacement – but the repairs are working.

Until the sod is replaced on #1 to finish the repair, we’re making #1 a Par 3. Players can tee off at the 150 yard area. We’ve moved the Tee Box markers to that area. Everything should be back to normal in a couple weeks, after things dry out a bit and we can lay new sod.

#11 will play as normal, except that the repaired area will be marked as Ground-Under-Repair until we can lay new sod there as well.

Where will the sod come from? The course, of course! We’ll start pulling good sod out of the Range, and even a few sand traps that we’ll put sand back in.

The repairs continue. We hope you appreciate our efforts as much as we appreciate you playing at The Oaks.

UPDATE: After the rains and snow this past weekend, it’s apparent that the repairs on #1 work. However, the repair on #11 was not the entire solution. During the rain on Monday, I went out to inspect the repair, and to my dismay, there was water coming up from the center of our fix. That means not only was there a sprinkler head disconnected, but there is a drainage pipe disconnected somewhere under the repair, and we’ll find it!

Tee Box Stairs http://www.myoaksgolfcourse.com/tee-box-stairs/ Wed, 20 Feb 2013 12:50:19 +0000 http://www.myoaksgolfcourse.com/?p=246 We will construct stairs for tee boxes around the course. We want to make entering and exiting the tee box safer for our players. We'll tell you what the plan is, and what you can expect.

Just a quick update. Safety continues to be one of our top concerns. Last weekend we received our shipment of a little over 200 railroad ties, and drainage gravel. Once we get the tractor back together (finishing the repair of the hydraulic leak that prevented us from using the backhoe attachment) we will start building stair sets on tee boxes.

We’ll start with a few of the problem holes, and make our way around the course. The white tees on #13 are an early target, and then building a solution for the #12 tees is next.

Currently on many holes, railroad ties were laid on the ground simply as steps. Over time, these steps slide and shift causing treacherous conditions, and as the ties get older they become slippery, compounding the problem. Our solution is to construct bonafide stairs with the ties, complete with drainage. This should produce a longer lasting solution, and one that’s easier to maintain, not to mention more attractive.

Some tee boxes may be closed during the construction. Those tee boxes will be listed on the whiteboard in the clubhouse.

Be patient with the process. It will be worth the wait!
